Brazilian composer, poet and teacher. [...] After elementary studies in Latin, rhetoric, philosophy and music Álvares Pinto went to Portugal about 1740 and studied theory and composition in Lisbon under Henrique da Silva Esteves Negrão (d 1787). Of the several compositions by Álvares Pinto mentioned in the biographical literature (liturgical works, hymns, Passion music and masses) only two are now known: a Te Deum (c.1760) and a Salve regina
